Twitter

We’re all twits now
I’m getting incredibly excited about twitter and its inevitable mass take up during 2009. Probably far too excited, but there you go. Reasons I see for twitter’s imminent explosion:
- It’s simple: just one function, cleanly executed, in a highly usable manner.
- From that simple premise, comes a multitude of executions: ‘micro-blogging’, news feeds, celebrity gossip, social networking, and those that we haven’t even thought of yet.
- The API: it’s incredibly powerful. I don’t quite know how or why—I haven’t looked into it in detail, yet—but the plethora of third-party clients is evidence enough for me.
- It’s fun and addictive and it’s very close to breaking through to the mainstream: no longer just for the geeks, this webapp.
It seems quite extraordinary that just as facebook reached critical mass, a new pretender’s arrived, and feels so much more powerful whilst doing an awful lot less. Maybe twitter is the web embodiment of that old UNIX principle: do one thing well, and one thing only.
Here’s to 2009: the year of the twit
